Ö.T.R.A. App
The starting point: when every second counts
Our partnership with the Ajak Volunteer Fire Association began in 2020, when the Volunteer Firefighter Alert and Notification App (Ö.T.R.A.) was launched. The project grew out of a real, critical problem: alerting volunteer firefighters wasn't fast or effective enough.
The traditional alert system relied on SMS and email, which was limited in several ways: character limits meant text messages couldn't carry enough information, users didn't read emails right away, and there was no feedback on who could respond to a given incident. In an emergency, however, every second counts.
Preparation: a solution built on real-world experience
The solution was built on real operational experience. The app didn't start from a theoretical UX problem but from a concrete gap that showed up in the field. The project was funded and launched thanks to the Invitech InnoMax competition, where it won both the jury prize and the audience award.
- Integrating the existing system: processing emails from the national disaster management authority and interpreting unstructured data in real time.
- Optimizing alert speed: notifications arrive with minimal delay, even when the phone is on silent.
- Decision support: collecting responses, showing real-time statuses and helping the officer in charge put the crew together.

Development and technical challenges: a critical system in real time.
During development, we paid special attention to:
- simplified UX for critical situations: one-tap status updates, quick navigation launch and minimal interaction under stress,
- multi-level permissions: volunteer users, a commander (admin) interface and a mix of web and mobile use,
- stable handling of mass notifications, even under heavy load,
- core app features:
- incidents shown on a map and in a list,
- one-tap status responses and navigation to the scene,
- fire hydrants on the map, plus organization and member management.
Over the past 5 years, features have been added gradually based on real needs, driven by continuous development cycles and feedback from the field.
Technical challenges and innovative solutions
One of the biggest development challenges was that the system has to work flawlessly, in real time, in critical situations. The app doesn't just notify; it actively supports coordination and decision-making.
Alerting infrastructure:
- Automatic processing of the disaster management authority's unstructured email alerts and turning them into push notifications.
- Critical alerts with a custom sound profile that get through even when phones are on silent.
- Real-time attendance and response tracking: who is heading out and who has arrived on scene.
Coordination and admin features:
- A web interface for commanders to review available personnel and close incidents.
- Profile and availability management, plus organization member management.
- Internal testing and continuous fine-tuning based on feedback from real deployments.
Validation confirmed that the notification chain is reliable, status updates stay simple under stress, and the system handles peak loads without issues.

Results: measurable real-world impact
Launching the app had a significant, measurable impact on operations. By 2026, it had become one of the most widely used digital platforms for volunteer firefighters in Hungary:
- 350 organizations actively use the app,
- 5,000+ registered users,
- 200,000+ alerts processed successfully,
- 2–3 minutes faster response per incident,
- Much better information quality and visibility of available personnel.
Faster turnout, better coordination, more effective response. Ö.T.R.A. isn't just a mobile app; it's a digital tool that supports critical infrastructure and directly helps save lives.
Next goals
The project is still in active development. The team keeps working to make the system even faster, more reliable and more widely available.
Focus areas for the next phase:
- adding more decision-support features,
- speeding up the alerting process even further,
- securing new funding to keep the app free,
- expanding international use.
Goal: “Time saved is lives saved.” – Keeping the app free in the long run and expanding internationally.
